
In spray tanning, two terms often get mixed up: bronzers and base colours. They sound similar, and they’re both part of a solution’s colour system – but their functions couldn’t be more different.
Getting this distinction right helps you choose the right solution for each client and set clear expectations about results.
BASE COLOUR: THE TONE CORRECTOR

The base colour is the “functional” part of a spray tan formula. It doesn’t alter the chemical reaction of DHA – it helps influence how the final tone is perceived once the tan develops.
Base colours works by neutralising undertones in the skin so the developed tan appears balanced and natural:
- Green base → balances redness.
- Violet base → counteracts yellow/golden tones.
- Red base → corrects green in olive undertones.
- Chocolate, blue, and black bases → act as universal tone balancers.
Even though the visible pigment rinses away, its balancing influence remains visible in the developed result. Think of base colour like an undercoat when painting a wall – it doesn’t change the paint itself, but it ensures the colour develops to true tone.
MAKING THE DISTINCTION: BASE COLOURS VS COSMETIC BRONZERS
Base colours and cosmetic bronzers are not the same thing – they serve completely different functions within a spray tan formulation.
- Base colours are functional pigments that support undertone correction. They’re deliberately balanced within the formulation to help visually balance the developing tan during the early stages of the DHA/erythrulose reaction – without altering the reaction itself. Their role is to keep the development visually even and true-to-tone so that, once fully processed, the colour appears natural and well balanced to the eye.
- Cosmetic bronzers are surface pigments for instant visual colour. They help you see application and give clients an immediate bronzed appearance – but they rinse away after the first shower.
Even though both originate from the same pigment family, their purpose and function in the formula are not the same. Base colours are integrated within the formula to guide tone perception in the final result; cosmetic bronzers are added on top for temporary visual effect during wear.
When we say “bronzers wash off”, we mean cosmetic bronzers only – not the base colour system. The base’s tonal influence remains visible in the final result.
COSMETIC BRONZER: THE INSTANT COLOUR

Cosmetic bronzers give clients their instant tan look. They sit on the surface, providing immediate colour while DHA develops underneath.
Heavy bronzer loads can make skin look very dark immediately after application, but that effect is temporary. As bronzers fade with the first showers, the true tone and depth of the DHA tan are revealed – clients often assume their tan has “lightened”, when they are really seeing the bronzer stain lift.
Bronzers can influence how tone appears during wear (adding warmth, coolness, or temporary depth), but they do not affect how DHA develops or how dark the final tan becomes. That outcome depends on DHA %, the client’s skin, and the overall formulation.
Lighter bronzers typically perform better: they look more natural during wear, minimise streak/transfer risk, and let the base colour do its job.
SAME INGREDIENT, DIFFERENT FUNCTION
Here’s where confusion starts: base colours and cosmetic bronzers can come from the same pigment ingredients – the difference is in how they are used.
Like baking:
- Eggs in the batter bind and structure the cake (you don’t “see” them, but they shaped the result).
- Egg wash on top makes the crust glossy (great right away, but it doesn’t change the cake inside).
Both are eggs – different function and outcome.
It’s the same with spray tan solutions:
- Base colours (functional pigments) work within the formula to balance undertones and shape the perceived tone of the developed tan.
- Cosmetic bronzers (surface pigments) sit on top for instant, temporary colour only.
And while both may come from the same family of cosmetic pigment ingredients, they are not handled in the same way in formulation.
Cosmetic bronzers are included to create instant depth of colour on the skin, while base colours are carefully integrated to neutralise undertones and influence how the tone visually develops.
The exact process forms part of our manufacturing secrets, but the key takeaway is simple: same ingredient type, completely different function.
TRUE BASES VS “MULTI-BASE” FORMULATIONS

A true base is where a formula is deliberately designed around a dominant undertone pigment (like green, violet, red, etc.) that helps correct undertones and guide the visual tone of the final tan.
That dominant pigment doesn’t mean the bronzer itself looks green, violet, or red – the final bronzer colour is still brown. The base refers to which pigment has been weighted more heavily within that brown blend to achieve a specific tonal correction.
By contrast, a multi-base formulation isn’t multiple true bases. It simply uses all colourants in roughly equal parts, so there’s no single undertone pigment leading the formulation. This creates a balanced brown bronzer… not a green, violet, or red base… which is why “multi-base” is really just another term for a neutral or universal base.
Some brands adjust their visible bronzers to appear more green, violet, or red to show a base colour solution – but that doesn’t make the bronzer itself the “base”. The base component is about how the pigments are weighted and function within the formulation, not about the visible bronzer appearance during application.
DO ALL BASES SUIT EVERY CLIENT?

Not all base colours are designed the same way. Some are universal bases that suit all undertones, while others are more undertone-specific:
- Blue base → suits all undertones.
- Chocolate base → suits all undertones.
- Black base → suits all undertones.
- Red base → best for olive undertones.
- Green base → best for cool undertones.
- Violet base → best for warm undertones.
Even with universal bases, the final tone still reflects the client’s natural undertone (eg chocolate can read warmer with warmer undertones and more neutral with cool undertones.
HOW BASE COLOURS WORK IN COLOUR THEORY

Some bases (like green, violet, and red) work as targeted correctors, cancelling out specific undertones using colour theory:
- Green base + red/pink undertone = balanced brown
- Violet base + yellow undertone = balanced brown
- Red base + olive/green undertone = balanced brown
Universal bases (like blue, chocolate, and black) balance overall tone rather than cancelling a single undertone, which is why the suit all undertones.
WHAT HAPPENS OUTSIDE THE IDEAL MATCH?
Using a base outside its perfect match isn’t “wrong” – the tan will still develop – but in most cases it looks less natural because undertones aren’t balanced. Instead of neutralising, the base shifts tone:
- Green base on warm undertones (yellow/olive): pushes more golden
- Violet base on cool undertones (pink/red): pushes rosier/warmer
- Red base on non-olive undertones: can push too red/sunburnt
Depth always comes from DHA %.
Base influences tone – either balancing undertones or shifting them.

These examples show the same model (neutral undertone) tanned with different bases. Because she’s neutral, you can clearly see each base’s tone without undertone bias. (Most shown at day 2–3; the red base example is day 5.)
From 1st photo to last photo:
- Green base → golden-brown, sunlit warmth
- Blue base → flat, true neutral brown
- Red base → earthy, warm red-brown
- Chocolate base → smooth, balanced true brown
- Violet base → deep brown that reads slightly rosier on neutral skin
- Black base → deeper, cool-toned brown with definition
If base colours didn’t matter, these would all look the same. They don’t.
WHY BRONZERS DON’T SHOW TRUE DEPTH
Historically, many solutions used very heavy bronzers for two reasons:
- Instant satisfaction – clients wanted to see themselves dark straight away.
- Older DHA – less refined/stable DHA meant bronzers were used almost like a stain to fake depth while DHA developed. –>
This is also why some brands told clients to keep solution on for 24 hours – not for DHA, but to give bronzers time to stain the skin and “hold” the darker look.
The problem: it created a false impression of true depth. After the first couple of showers, colour seemed to “drop” – not because the tan vanished, but because the bronzer stain washed away.
Modern solutions don’t need this. With refined DHA (and supportive actives like erythrulose), the developed tan provides the depth – so bronzers can be lighter, more natural-looking during wear.
IS BASE COLOUR JUST A MARKETING GIMMICK?
No.
- Base colours are functional pigments designed to balance undertones so the developed tone appears natural.
- They work during early development to visually steady the outcome – they don’t alter DHA chemistry, but they influence what you see once development is complete.
- Without them, artists have fewer tools to avoid tans that pull too red, too yellow, or too muddy on certain skins.
By contrast, cosmetic bronzers are for instant appearance. They can tint the look temporarily, but they don’t determine development or depth.
MYTH VS FACT: CLEARING THE CONFUSION

MYTH: “Base colours don’t matter… they’re just a marketing trick”.
FACT: Base colours are functional, deliberate undertone correctors that help the developed tone appear balanced and natural.
MYTH: “Bronzers determine final depth”.
FACT: DHA, not bronzer, determines depth and longevity. Bronzers are temporary surface colour.
MYTH: “Heavier bronzers = better results”.
FACT: Heavy bronzers can stain/transfer and create a false sense of depth. Historically they were used to keep skin looking dark while older DHA caught up – which is why some brands pushed 24-hour wear. Today’s refined formulas don’t need that.
THE EVOLUTION OF BASE COLOURS

Green bases came first… a cosmetic chemist challenged the traditional approach and re-thought how spray tan formulas could be built. That breakthrough invited experimentation: violet followed, then red, chocolate, blue, and black… each adding control and nuance for professionals.
Colour theory followed to explain why bases worked – not the other way around. And no, bases weren’t invented to sell more bottles: formulation and manufacturing are expensive. Bases exist because they work, and they give professionals creative freedom to customise tone with intent.
CONCLUSION:

Base colours = tone correction.
Cosmetic bronzers = temporary instant colour.
DHA = depth of colour.
When you understand the difference, you can confidently select solutions that deliver true-to-tone results for every client – without being misled by heavy bronzers or marketing buzzwords like “multi-base”.
For professionals, this knowledge builds trust and credibility with clients.
For clients, it means a more natural, long-lasting tan that develops evenly and looks the way it should.
Today’s solutions don’t rely on bronzer tricks or gimmicks – they rely on science, formulation precision, and innovation.
And that understanding is what sets modern spray tanning apart from where it began.
SAYING ONE THING, FORMULATING ANOTHER
It’s interesting to see that some cosmetic chemists publicly claim colour theory/base colours don’t exist – yet their own brands describe their solutions as having “colour-corrective bronzers” or “a reddish hue for a warm, sun-kissed glow.”
That kind of language acknowledges the same principle they’re denying… that pigments are intentionally balanced to influence how the final tone is perceived on the skin.
Whether a brand calls it a base, a colour-corrective system, or bronzer technology, the concept is identical: pigment weighting is used to control tone and maintain balance in the developed tan.
So even when colour theory/base colours are dismissed by name, they’re still being used in practice.
EVOLUTION, NOT LIMITATION
Spray tanning has come a long way.
There was a time when clients were told to keep their solution on for 24 hours – and orange tones were common because DHA wasn’t as refined.
Then came 8-hour tans.
Then rapid rinse solutions.
Now, 20-minute rinse times exist – something that would have sounded impossible twenty years ago.
Each advancement happened because someone refused to believe the industry had reached its limit. Base colours are part of that same evolution – another step forward in refining how we customise and perfect the tanning process.
Innovation keeps spray tanning alive.
If we start saying “it can’t be done”, we box the industry into a corner.
And once something stops evolving, it stops growing – leaving room for something else to take over.
Some cosmetic chemists say base colours don’t exist… while MANY others know they do and formulate intentionally with them.
That’s the beauty of innovation: it takes curiosity, experimentation, and an open mind. The moment we decide that something can’t work, we close the door on discovering what can.
We’ve already come so far from where spray tanning began, and it’s exciting to imagine where it can go next.
But if cosmetic chemists and brands choose to play it safe and close the door on innovation, they’re not protecting the industry – they’re crucifying it.
